This month's installment is all about Lydia, who recently played Sandy Olsson in Waccamaw Middle School's 2019 reproduction of Grease. Lydia's mom is a close friend of mine. To help get Lydia into character, she asked me to do a pre-production photo shoot of Lydia as Sandy. Of course, I was delighted to say yes and quickly began coordinating the details.
We began the shoot at Johnny Rockets, the perfect backdrop to compliment Lydia's portrayal of the good-natured Sandy. Young Lydia is a natural in front of the camera. Here, she pretends to enjoy a milkshake, and daydream about her love, Danny Zuko. Wearing the classic 1950's skirt and sweater combo, she is indeed too pure to be a Pink Lady.
Though the school's reproduction took place on the 2nd and 3rd of this month, Lydia's photo shoot occurred back in March. Coincidentally, Myrtle Beach's annual Run to the Sun Car Show was going on, so I used it to showcase Lydia dressed in fierce, female greaser attire.
We wrapped up the session at Pavilion Park located in Broadway at the Beach, taking full advantage of a beautifully crafted, historic carousel to replicate the Rydell Graduation Carnival scene.
After we completed this shoot, I could barely wait to see Lydia perform as Sandy! The Waccamaw Middle School Drama Club did a great job recreating Grease, and the production was a huge success. The portraits I took of Lydia will be a beautiful addition to her theatrical scrapbook and a memorable keepsake for her mom.
Lydia is traveling to Atlanta, GA to audition for The Voice on July 27th! Lydia, if you're reading this, I wish you the best of luck at the audition, and in all your future endeavors!
