I recently had the pleasure of photographing a magical surprise proposal for Emerson and Christian, a couple whose love story began eight years ago. They met during their freshman year of college at a Halloween party. Emerson, initially interested in another guy, boldly asked Christian to dance despite his shyness. That night, they exchanged numbers, and they have been inseparable ever since, creating beautiful memories together.
Christian proposed during Emerson's family's annual beach vacation, a tradition that started when Emerson’s mother was in 8th grade. He chose a sentimental spot on the beach in front of their timeshare, making the moment even more special.
Emerson was overwhelmed with joy and gratitude to have her family present during such a special moment. Being incredibly close to her family, she felt truly blessed knowing that all four of her grandparents, who had been front row for every significant life event, were there to witness her engagement. As Christian began proposing, it dawned on her that one set of grandparents was watching, but then she turned to see her other grandparents and Christian’s parents walking down the beach! Having Christian’s parents there was an extra surprise, especially since they had traveled all the way from Massachusetts to South Carolina for the occasion. The love and joy from her family were undeniable, and Emerson cherished every moment, especially when everyone wanted a picture with her and Christian. It was a truly unforgettable experience.
For couples planning a surprise proposal, Emerson and Christian advise going ring shopping together to ensure both partners are happy with the choice. They believe that communication and involvement in the process enhance the experience without spoiling the surprise. Emerson’s engagement ring holds a special significance, deeply rooted in her family’s history. The ring was purchased from Wade’s Jewelers in Gibsonville, NC, a place that has been intertwined with her family for generations. The second-generation owner of Wade’s was responsible for setting up Emerson’s paternal grandparents on their first date, and it was only fitting that when her grandparents got engaged and married, they purchased their rings from their friend’s store. Over the years, Emerson’s parents continued the tradition, with both her paternal grandmother and mother’s rings coming from Wade’s. The family has remained close to the jeweler, visiting for anniversary gifts and other sentimental pieces. So when it came time for Emerson’s engagement, the third-generation ring from Wade’s Jewelers became a beautiful continuation of the family tradition.
We always ask couples why they fell in love, and this is their response. Christian fell in love with Emerson's intelligence, kindness, and compassion. He admires her beauty, work ethic, and inspiring commitment to self-care. Emerson loves Christian’s kindness, humility, humor, and authenticity. She appreciates how he truly sees her for who she is. Together, they are a beautiful example of a relationship built on mutual respect, admiration, and love.
As for their future, Emerson and Christian are considering a courthouse wedding and a celebration in Raleigh. They plan to continue living and working in the Raleigh/Durham area, where they have found happiness together.
It was an honor to capture such a meaningful day filled with laughter, happy tears, and the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.
